19-year old goalkeeper for the Gambian female national team, Fatim Jawara, has died after she drowned in the Mediterranean while trying to reach Europe.
Jawara was on board a boat that encountered trouble last month while crossing from Libya to Europe according to the Gambian football federation.
Her death was confirmed by her family as revealed by the Gambian football federation boss Lamin Kaba Bajo.
Fatim Jawara was part of the Gambia team that represented the nation at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Azerbaijan. She made her debut with the senior team last year.
